Description
The sandwich cake entered Swedish cuisine in the 1940s and has become as traditional a festive appetizer as Olivier salad is in Russian cuisine. Smörgåstårta is prepared for various celebrations, but most often for christenings and birthdays. There are thousands of variations in fillings, shapes, and decorations; this is just one example.
Ingredients
- Sourdough Bread 12 pieces
- Spanish onions 1 head
- 9% Vinegar 0 fl oz
- Water 5 fl oz
- Sugar 1 tablespoon
- Salt 1 tablespoon
- Beetroot 1 piece
- Semi-soft cream cheese 10 oz
- Mayonnaise 3 spoons
- Smoked Ham on the Bone 5 oz
- Pickled Cauliflower ½ pieces
- Pickled Apples 1 piece
- Sour Cream 10 oz
- Horseradish Leaves 0 oz
- Chicken Egg 2 pieces
- Garlic 1 clove
- Worcestershire Sauce to taste
- Lemon 1 piece
- Quail Egg 2 pieces
- Asparagus 4 pieces
- Radish 5 pieces
- Cucumbers 1 piece
- Scallions 1 bunch
- Parsley 1 bunch
- Spinach 0 oz
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1
Boil the beetroot and grate it. Mix with two tablespoons of cream cheese and one tablespoon of mayonnaise.
Step 2
Finely chop the ham, apple, and pickled cucumber. Mix with four tablespoons of cream cheese, 100 grams of sour cream, and half a teaspoon of horseradish.
Step 3
Finely chop two hard-boiled eggs and some garlic. Mix with two tablespoons of sour cream and the same amount of mayonnaise, adding a few drops of Worcestershire sauce.
Step 4
Slice the red onion into wedges. Bring the vinegar, water, salt, and sugar to a boil. Pour the brine over the onion. Leave it in the refrigerator for four hours.
Step 5
In a bowl, mix 100 grams of sour cream and cream cheese, half a teaspoon of horseradish, and the zest of one lemon.
Step 6
Lay three slices of bread next to each other lengthwise. Spread the beet filling evenly over them. Sprinkle with finely chopped green onions.
Step 7
Place three more slices of bread on top and evenly distribute the ham filling. Sprinkle with green onions and fresh spinach.
Step 8
Layer the bread and evenly spread the egg filling over it. Garnish with green onions. Finish with another layer of bread. Spread the cake with horseradish cream and let it sit in the refrigerator for a couple of hours.
Step 9
Garnish with cucumber, radish, asparagus, herbs, boiled quail eggs, and pickled onions.
