Step 1

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onion and stir well to coat it completely with the butter. Reduce the heat, cover with a lid, and cook for about 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally, until the volume is reduced by two-thirds and the onion is golden brown.

Step 2

Then, stirring constantly, cook for another 10–15 minutes until the onion is nicely caramelized.

Step 3

Remove from heat, season with salt and pepper, and let cool.
