Description
Smørbrød is a classic Norwegian fish sandwich served on dark bread. Norwegians cannot imagine breakfast or brunch without this appetizer. There are over a thousand varieties of such sandwiches. In restaurants, they are served as a vibrant and tasty compliment from the chef. The recipe provided describes a classic preparation method. This is the first smørbrød that became known outside of Norway.
Ingredients
- Rye Bread 4 pieces
- Sprats 8 pieces
- Sliced Processed Cheese 3 pieces
- Pickled Cauliflower 5 oz
- Sweet Red Onion 1 head
- Chives 1 bunch
- Quail Egg 4 pieces
- Turnips 4 pieces
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1
Melt the cheese in a saucepan, adding 2–3 tablespoons of water, until it reaches a sauce-like consistency.
Step 2
Dice the pickled cucumbers into small cubes. Mix the cheese mixture and cucumbers together.
Step 3
Spread the cheese mixture on the bread. Top with two sprats each.
Step 4
Slice the red onion into thin rings and place them on the fish.
Step 5
Separate the yolk from the white. Place the yolk in the onion ring.
Step 6
Slice the radishes into thin rounds and place them on the sandwich.
Step 7
Sprinkle with finely chopped chives.
