Chicory with Ham
Ingredients
- Chicory 12 pieces
- Butter 0 oz
- York Ham 12 slices
- Gruyère cheese 5 oz
- Safflower Oil 2 tablespoons
- Wheat Flour 2 tablespoons
- Salt to taste
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1
Remove the stems from the chicory and boil in salted water. At the same time, bring an equal amount of salted water to a boil in another pot. Once the chicory is boiling, transfer it to the other pot: this helps avoid bitterness. Bring the water back to a boil and cook for 20 minutes. Then drain the water, wrap each head of chicory in a slice of ham, and place in a baking dish.
Step 2
Melt the butter in a saucepan along with the sunflower oil, add the flour, and cook, stirring, for a couple of minutes. Then slowly pour in the milk, add salt, and cook, stirring, for another 10 minutes. Pour the sauce over the chicory.
Step 3
Sprinkle with grated cheese and place in a preheated oven at 355°F (350 degrees Fahrenheit). Bake for 10-15 minutes until the cheese melts and turns golden brown. Serve immediately while hot.
