Description

Winter Pie with Apples and Sweetened Condensed Milk

Ingredients

  • Butter 5 oz
  • Apple 4 pieces
  • Wheat Flour 5 oz
  • Water 6 tablespoons
  • Sugar 5 oz
  • White Beans ½ piece
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk with Coffee 1 can
  • Egg white 2 pieces
  • Walnuts 0 oz
  • Salt a pinch

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1

Sift the flour into a bowl, add the butter cut into small cubes (100 g) and a pinch of salt. Rub the mixture with your hands until it resembles crumbs.

Step 2

Add ice-cold water (I put the water in the freezer for 3–5 minutes beforehand) and knead the dough.

Step 3

Roll out the dough evenly in a greased baking dish with a little butter.

Step 4

Use a fork to make several holes in the dough to prevent it from puffing up during baking.

Step 5

Preheat the oven to 390°F.

Step 6

Line the baking dish with parchment paper and sprinkle with weights (I used buckwheat).

Step 7

Bake for about 15 minutes.

Step 8

While the base is baking, prepare the filling. Place sugar in a pan and set it over high heat, waiting for the sugar to start melting. Use a spatula to spread the sugar evenly in the pan to prevent burning. When it turns into brown caramel, splash in a little hot water and stir to create a thick brown syrup.

Step 9

Add the chopped apples and vanilla to the syrup and simmer over medium heat until the apples release their juice and then the liquid evaporates.

Step 10

Add a piece of butter (50 g) and stir until the butter combines with the sugar. Let it cool.

Step 11

Lightly beat the sweetened condensed milk with the eggs in a blender.

Step 12

Place the apples in the baking dish and pour the sweetened condensed milk mixture over them.

Step 13

Bake at 340°F for 40 minutes or until the filling thickens and resembles jelly (baking time may vary! In my oven, it took only 20 minutes).

Step 14

Cool completely before slicing and sprinkle with crushed walnuts (which can be easily made in a blender) and powdered sugar.
