Upside-Down Apple Pie with Caramel

Ingredients

  • Puff Pastry 5 oz
  • Lemon ½ piece
  • Apple 10 pieces
  • Sugar 5 oz
  • Butter 5 oz
  • Cinnamon 1 teaspoon

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 445°F.

Step 2

Thaw the pastry and roll it out to a size slightly larger than the diameter of the pan. After rolling, place the pastry in the refrigerator to prevent it from rising.

Step 3

Peel the apples, cut them in half, remove the cores, and sprinkle with juice from half a lemon.

Step 4

In a skillet, melt the butter, then add the sugar and cinnamon or vanilla extract. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture turns into caramel.

Step 5

When the caramel is ready, remove the skillet from the heat and carefully arrange the apples in it as tightly as possible, placing the halves on their sides.

Step 6

Return the skillet to the stove over the lowest heat for 25 minutes. The caramel will start to bubble and increase in volume due to the apple juice. After the time is up, remove from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes.

Step 7

Spread the pastry over the top, tucking the edges around the apples. Make 3–4 holes in the pastry with a knife and place it in the oven for 30 minutes.

Step 8

Once removed, let it sit and cool for 15 minutes.

Step 9

The most critical moment: flipping the pie. Place a plate on top, holding it with your hand, and flip it over.

Step 10

Serve warm, preferably with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream as an accompaniment.
