Description

You can replace part of the flour with oatmeal (or oat flour). You can make buttermilk at home: add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to a cup of milk. Optionally, you can brush the dough round with a beaten egg before baking. Serve with butter and other Irish dishes.

Ingredients

  • Wheat Flour 15 oz
  • Salt 1 teaspoon
  • Activated Baking Soda 1 teaspoon
  • Buttermilk 10 fl oz
  • Butter 1 teaspoon

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 430°F. Melt the butter on a warm baking sheet, greasing the surface.

Step 2

In a large bowl, mix the dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, salt).

Step 3

Make a well in the mixture and pour in half of the buttermilk (you can make it at home: add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to a cup of milk). Mix the dough with your hands, then pour in the remaining buttermilk so that the dough becomes soft but not too wet.

Step 4

Knead the dough on a floured surface. Form a round about 20 cm in diameter and make a small cross-shaped cut on top.

Step 5

Place the dough round on the baking sheet and bake for about 30 minutes.
