Description
King Cake, which translates to 'Royal Bread', is a sweet ring filled with nuts and dried fruits.
Ingredients
- Wheat Flour 5 oz
- Dry yeast 0 oz
- Sugar 5 oz
- Milk 5 fl oz
- Butter 5 oz
- Whole egg 2 pieces
- Oranges 1 piece
- Lemon 1 piece
- Brandy 0 fl oz
- Salt a pinch
- Candied fruits to taste
- Chopped almonds to taste
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1
Mix warm milk, yeast, and a teaspoon of sugar, and let it sit for 5 minutes until the yeast activates and foam forms on the surface.
Step 2
Sift the flour.
Step 3
Add the zest of lemon and orange, the remaining sugar, and a pinch of salt.
Step 4
Mix in the yeast mixture, softened butter, egg yolk, and brandy.
Step 5
The dough should pull away from the sides of the bowl but shouldn't be too stiff. If the dough is too runny, add an additional 20-30 grams of flour.
Step 6
Transfer the dough to a bowl greased with vegetable oil, cover with plastic wrap, and place in a warm spot for 2-3 hours. The dough should rise at least twice its original size.
Step 7
Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a ring. Place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for another 30-60 minutes.
Step 8
Beat the egg yolk with a fork and brush it over the risen pie.
Step 9
Then decorate the pie with any candied fruits and nuts to your liking.
Step 10
Place in the oven preheated to 320°F for 30 minutes.
