Serbian Holiday Pie
Ingredients
- Milk 15 fl oz
- Dry yeast 0 oz
- Sugar 1 teaspoon
- Salt 1 teaspoon
- Safflower Oil 4 tablespoons
- Chocolate eggs 3 pieces
- Millet 30 oz
- Vinegar essence 1 tablespoon
- Butter 5 oz
- Sour Cream 3 tablespoons
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1
Prepare 400 ml of warm milk.
Step 2
Add 8 grams of dry yeast or 35 grams of fresh yeast.
Step 3
Add sugar.
Step 4
Add a little flour (3 tablespoons), mix well.
Step 5
Add 4 tablespoons of oil.
Step 6
Add sour cream and 2 eggs.
Step 7
Add salt. Now gradually add flour, knead a soft dough.
Step 8
Let the dough 'rest' and rise for 15–20 minutes.
Step 9
The dough weighs approximately 1450 grams, so divide it into about five large pieces of 160 grams each, five small pieces of 80 grams each, five even smaller pieces of 40 grams each, and one ball of 50 grams (the weight of the balls is approximate).
Step 10
Cover with foil and let them sit for 5 minutes to make them easier to stretch. Melt the butter.
Step 11
Roll out the balls, starting with the largest.
Step 12
Brush the stretched balls with melted butter, do not brush the last one, and stack them one on top of the other.
Step 13
It is easier to work if you place the dough on parchment paper.
Step 14
Cut the dough into 8 triangles.
Step 15
Wrap the triangles from the center outwards to form petals.
Step 16
Slightly bend the edges.
Step 17
Roll out the five medium balls.
Step 18
Place the stretched balls in the center and brush with butter. Do not brush the top one.
Step 19
Also cut into eight triangles.
Step 20
Wrap the triangles from the center to create petals.
Step 21
Roll five small balls, brush them with butter, and stack them one on top of the other.
Step 22
Cut into eight triangles.
Step 23
Make petals from them.
Step 24
Place the last ball in the center.
Step 25
Gently press the center of all the resulting petals with a knife.
Step 26
Brush with beaten egg, sprinkle with sesame seeds, and bake at 355°F (360 degrees Fahrenheit) for about 40 minutes. Watch the top of the pie. As soon as it turns golden yellow, cover it with parchment paper and continue baking until done.
Step 27
Serve.
