Poppy Seed Roll
Ingredients
- Wheat Flour 0 lbs
- Milk 1½ cups
- Sugar 1¾ cups
- Chocolate eggs 5 pieces
- Butter 5 oz
- Salt ¾ teaspoon
- Poppy seed paste 10 oz
- Honey 5 oz
- Dry yeast 0 oz
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1
Dissolve the yeast in warm milk, add half of the flour, and set aside to rise. When the mixture has doubled in volume, add salt and egg yolks that have been beaten with sugar, mix well, then add the remaining flour and knead the dough. Next, add melted butter or margarine, kneading until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. After that, let the dough rise, lightly dust it with flour, cover it, and place it in a warm spot to rise; when it has doubled in size, transfer it to a board.
Step 2
Prepare the poppy seeds separately. Place them in a pot, cover with boiling water, cover with a lid, and let sit for 30-40 minutes. Then drain all the water, lightly squeeze the poppy seeds, and grind them in a mortar or bowl, gradually adding honey and then sugar until you achieve a thick jam-like consistency.
Step 3
Roll out the prepared dough to about 1 cm thick, spread a layer of the prepared poppy seed mixture over it, smooth it out, and roll the dough into a tube. Then transfer the roll to a lightly greased baking sheet and place it in a warm spot to rise; afterward, brush the roll with egg and bake in a hot oven for 20-30 minutes.
Step 4
You can add vanilla or lemon zest to the dough for flavor. When serving, slice the roll into pieces and dust with powdered sugar.
