Cornbread
Baking and Desserts • American
Description
The recipe for cornbread came to Americans from the indigenous peoples of North America. In the South, this bread is baked in cast iron skillets using coarse cornmeal and is enjoyed with spicy dishes and fried meats. Our cornbread recipe from the North requires mixing cornmeal with wheat flour. In South America, they often incorporate hot peppers, cheese, or corn into the batter, and if you drizzle hot cornbread with maple syrup, it becomes a North American dessert.
