Caramel
Baking and Desserts • European
Description
The cooking time depends on the intended use of the caramel. Light caramel is good for decoration, while dark caramel is used for flavoring.
Ingredients
- Sugar 10 oz
- Water 4 tablespoons
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1
Take a large aluminum pot with a thick bottom and heat it over medium heat for a few seconds. Add the sugar and wait until it starts to melt and become liquid around the edges of the pot. Stir and keep on the heat until the sugar begins to turn a brownish color - this should take about 10 minutes over medium heat.
Step 2
Remove the pot from the heat and add the water - be careful, the caramel will sizzle and start to splatter. Mix well, return the pot to the heat, and wait for the formed lumps to melt. The caramel is ready to use.
