Eggnog Cocktail
Beverages • European
Description
The base of the eggnog recipe is an egg whipped with milk, rum, honey, and a pinch of nutmeg. For children, the alcohol is replaced with syrup or honey. Sound familiar? It's our eggnog, exactly the same! No wonder, as eggnog is the ancestor of a whole category of drinks in the flip style, which are hot cocktails with egg and spices. Flip is the sound made by a hot nail dropped into a cup; this is how the first American settlers warmed their spirits. The tradition of drinking eggnog specifically at Christmas and in front of a roaring fireplace was introduced by George Washington, who hosted family gatherings at his estate. Now, there is even a pub-museum called Pioneer’s Pub in that area, where they brew eggnog according to the first president's signature recipe—with rye whiskey and milk sugar.
