Club Sandwich
Sandwiches • Australian
Description
The sandwich owes its name to its origin: it was first prepared (or something similar) in a private club in New York City in the late 19th century. A second version is not far from the first: turkey with lettuce was also placed between toasted slices of bread around the same time and in the same city, but in a different club, catering to card players. However, it doesn’t really matter whether this sandwich was first served to a New York magnate or a relative squandering his fortune at the card table; it was in a club, and the sandwich received its corresponding name. And its fame—this dish was mentioned in newspapers of the late 19th century, meaning it truly made an impression at that time. Over time, the club sandwich has grown in details and ingredients. Now it has so many ingredients that it is held together with a cocktail skewer to keep it from falling apart. Bacon, turkey or chicken, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, and mayonnaise. Generously layered. But it is still held together by toasted white bread.
